The Foundation and Spiritual Roots
Amritsar, one of the most prominent cities in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab, is the spiritual and cultural center of the Sikh religion. The city was founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru. Originally known as Ramdaspur, the city's current name is derived from the "Amrit Sarovar" (Pool of Nectar), the sacred tank built by the Guru. In the center of this pool stands the magnificent Harmandir Sahib, universally known as the Golden Temple, which was completed by his successor, Guru Arjan Dev.
